Interesting, but is this Quaker lady, and this group actually against ALL kinds of borders? Because if they are, I'd worry about this:

300+ Mexican women have been murdered and raped along the Mexican side of the border. It's a patriarchical society which gives us the word, "macho". No border means we could expect the same to move North!

    www.libertadlatina.org/Crisis...ide.htm

    In addition:

The Roman Catholic church actively fights all birth control. It is in that church's interest for the population of countries South of the Rio Grand to BURST AT THE SEEMS. Churches here would gain members. More right wing legislators would get elected, and we could expect the public schools to founder, as tax dollars would start to flow to church schools.

Borders may not be pretty things at all times, but in this real world, having none would be worse. I have to wonder if the folks here would thwart all attempts at immigration control. Lemme go check . . Anyone know?

Dogma flows like poisoned water from the factories of the corporate world. Until people give it up we (collectively) are doomed. I was listening to npr last month or so and a 9yr old girl in Brazil (I bleeve), her mother and the Dr who performed the abortion were excommunicated.

This poor child got pregnant with TWINS, carrying them to term would very likely mean her death, and the fact that they were from her bastard molesting father makes it likely that they would not be healthy anyway.

I was amazed at how many people called in and said they would make their daughter "go through with" the pregnancy... the way they stated it you would have thought that she was voluntarily sexually active! Disgusting. When you are a victim, you should not have to bear the consequences! It's like stoning a woman because she was raped. grrr!

Ethereal, you've addressed two things: capitalism and religious opposition to abortion.

It helps to have a state founded upon separation of church and state in order for us to have legal abortion. Highly Catholic Argentina isn't going to welcome it, nor Ireland, nor other states similar. I'm as opposed to controlling religions as you, but know that Thomas Jefferson, Madison, and others back then were against them, also.

What alternative is there to capitalism? State controlled businesses were the norm under Right-wing fascism, from Japan to Germany to Italy. A free market state, the USA, bombed those states into oblivion. Thankfully.

State controlled businesses were the norm under Left-wing fascism, from the USSR to China (Until recently in China.) Those systems deteriorated because of poverty. Their own peoples tried to flee. (East Germany shot those trying to escape!)

I've never heard of other serious attempts at anything else. So, I'll advocate capitalism of another variety: as found in places such as Iceland, Denmark, Sweden, etc. Afterall, every commune here in the USA owes a debt to the capitalist system which allows it to market its goods.

i would like to see a village economy with grassroots style "Marxist communism" the Marx model was fine... Lenin effed it up by making participation compulsory with a smaller group dictating to a larger group (fascism) true communism only works in very small groups (small villages/communities) we are not experiencing "true" capitalism either. By paying into a system to maintain gvt, emergency services, roads and highways in some cases electricity, we are using the "owning the large machinery that everyone uses" model of communism. The fact that payment to and participation in this system is mandatory (other than leaving the country) makes it fascist, especially since how it is used, whether or not it becomes privatized, and rate hikes are determined by a small group... Keep in mind that i think that is largely our fault for having given up our say, most ppl are too lazy to write reps and good luck getting them to vote.

In many ways i think it was easier for our founders, since the colonies were small. Capitalism is fine when not managed with greed. forcing ppl to help each other isn't the answer either, we all individually and collectively have to come to that decision on our own, and often do, unfortunately it usually happens under crises. It needs to be an everyday thing. Reflexive.
