  We had a clivus multrum in a summer house in Maine circa 1976, worked OK w/ electric fan to increase ventilation, it is still there as far as I know

  I've been in several homes that have Clivus systems. I've never noticed a smell; but one homeowner told me that during power outages, he sometimes gets a whiff. I really like the "compost chute in the kitchen" feature.
