hello there, we are a growing family (2nd miracle due in 8 weeks, firstborn is nearly 3) currently "living" (if you can call it that!!) in los angeles with a deep need to share life and expand our boundaries to a world beyond the apartment walls. we would LOVE to find a place with other families, nature, an organic garden to share, and conscious people to be around. we are mostly vegan/raw, non-church-going Christians, very into personal growth and spirituality, music, green building (my husband is a builder/carpenter), etc.
anyone know of any communities, or even an open-minded family with extra room, preferably in california? cheers!

Re: aching for a tribe & nature: family seeking a california community to join
Fri, July 10, 2009 - 5:37 PMy9ou might want to check out Green Valley Village, near SEbastopol CA. notsure how well the family scene is going there, but it;s a pretty functional old-style shared ommunity.
there is a strong homebirth community in and around that part of Sonoma COUnty, one of the places it started really in te 1970s.
I'm originally from LA too but have made my home in the Bay Area my whole adult life, except for 5 eyars in the Sierra foothills around nevadas CIty CA and a eyar or so spent traveling through MExico and Central AMerica and aorund teh periphery of the US and Canada,
not living cooperatively right now, thinking of moving in with a lovely older woman who is disabled and has some rooms to rent in ehr house in Berkeley. I;d r=seriously consider living cooperatively inSonoma County now, exept that my teen daughter is attending a high school she lvoes here and wants to stay through grduaton which is three years away.
what are your birthing plans for your new baby?

Re: aching for a tribe & nature: family seeking a california community to join
Sun, November 22, 2009 - 1:35 PMHi Amanda,
My husband and I have long yearned for community. We live in St. Ignatius, MT, which is about 40 miles North of Missoula. We have a large log home, 10 acres, greenhouse, garage (part converted into a shop) with an upstairs potential apt. We are nestled in the cedars and have a creek flowing through the property. The place needs lots of work, Don renovates houses, and has done quite a bit here, although there is more to go. There are some great garden spaces here, lots of raspberries and strawberries, and neither one of us is too much into gardening and would really welcome someone who is. We both work for a non-profit that provides services to children and families who have abuse/neglect issues, and we are now becoming a mental health center. Progressive, liberal Christianity best describes us, open to all faiths, we have a spiritual group that meets in our home on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of each month. We are vegetarians. Don, my husband is 61, I am 53 and we have fur children (two doggies). I saw that you are interested in CA, but was attracted to your ad and so responded. Our vision would be to be in community with folks who are focused on growing spiritually and see community as an extension/expression of their spirituality. We do not drink/drug/smoke and are not hard nosed about their use by others, but do prefer to not be around it. Core beliefs are that we humans are made to/meant to live together, share resources with one another, be kind to the earth and each other. Service to others is a key value, so we would like the community to be focused on service, not sure what type. We have experience in consensus decision making and believe that this helps everyone have a voice and helps create shared decisions that folks own. Glad to converse more if you would like.
Thanksgiving Blessings,
Julie
