It's an interesting model for community and a successful one. According to our visitors, the community is currently open to new members. http://www.eastwind.org

I've looked into several intentional communities over the years, and they're of great interest to me.

I have a question, and would especially love to hear feedback from those who have lived in community, and have comments about issues of privacy while living in community....

I noticed that various communities have different arrangements with regards to privacy. In some, there are separate bedrooms with doors and the usual house-type setup. In some, there are bedrooms, but no doors...perhaps curtains...perhaps just a door that's been removed, leaving an opening.... In others, there are large communal living spaces with no walls. Some have people living in individual houses, huts, yurts, domes, teepees, or whatever...just a few people to each one.

My question is this...what levels of privacy seemed to be most successful? What were the benefits and drawbacks of the levels of privacy in any community where you lived? Would you prefer to be in a situation with almost no privacy, such as a large communal living space with no walls, or would you prefer something closer to the other extreme, with 2-3 people living in small homes arranged into a community?

One community I'm very interested in has the no-walls-communal setup, and personally, it strikes me as a recipe for madness. I imagine that living like that would bring up plenty of neuroses and odd behavior...kind of the opposite psychological effect as living in solitary confinement. People go loopy with no human contact or stimulation, and it seems to me (a person who likes quiet moments alone, and actually needs them daily) that I'd similarly go loopy from an overload of human contact and stimulation.

Anyone with any thoughts on the various arrangements of privacy within intentional communities...I'd love to hear from you....

Most new forming communities fail. That is not from bad design or anything like that. It is the same with companies, most new companies fail as well. Mostly it is a problem with lack of funding. If the money is there, the chance of success will be high. If the money is not there, it will take some pretty committed people to make it work.

I put intentional communities into two categories. Shared income and private income.

Private income seems to be what most people think they want, but I disagree. To live in a private income community, you must have your own income, you must be self employed, unless it is a large enough community to supply you with work for income. If some has a business in such a community which needs workers, that business need not pay much because the people who live there likely have few other options for producing income. On the other hand, if that business needs more people, extra pay will not draw more people very effectively, 'cause there are few people in the area. That is, unless the community is in a city. If it is in a city, I call it a condominium.

Shared income is a whole different story. You can think of a shared income community as a business which gives a whole lot more employee perks than a regular business. Shared income provides the people with work. The people do not need to be self employed, although forming shared income communities like to attract people who have income sources to help them get started. A shared income community which is democratic or leaderless is also a "worker controlled company". A shared income community should provide you with all your needs, free health care, free food, free cloths, vacation time and money, full retirement and elderly care, free education, free everything.

How can a shared income community do that? It is a business, like any other business. It has to produce income. Producing income is where the problems are. If you've visited a shared income community, you probably have seen that the people seem to work fine. There really doesn't seem to be a problem with getting the people to work. The problem is in developing the income sources.

Working to create a moneyless society does not mean that you can forget about money. Your moneyless society must produce money to survive, so it must run businesses. It is only moneyless internally, externally it must produce income.

Creating new products to sell should be very easy. I've got dozens of very good ideas which could produce very large amounts of income, and hundreds of mediocre ideas which could also produce income. There are a whole lot of people like me, who have lots of ideas as well. Ideas are not the only thing you need though. You need people. If you get a few really good people working on even a crappy idea, it will produce income. Get those same people working on a good idea, and you'll have enough income to fund several communities.

Remember a shared income community is basically a worker controlled company with land. So technically, land is not required to form it. You can simply start a worker controlled company, and once it starts producing income, buy land.

A company is simply a group of people working together to get something done. Nothing more. It should be easy to start, but it is very difficult to get people to put their time into something. Often people think they can't do something. People who start their own businesses usually do it all themselves. If you are not shy, you can do sales. Sales does not require a salesman type or pushy personality, because nice polite people also have advantages in sales. Pushy people tend to do better in sales, but it is not required. Shy people however, tend to have a big disadvantage in the sales area, but even they can do it if they try really hard.

I talk about sales, because for me sales is always the road block. I'm a shy person, so I have extreme difficulty in that area. For me, coming up with product ideas is easy. I also know some people who can help create products to sell. They won't produce income though, unless we have people to help us sell them.

All that is really needed to start a community is a group of 10 committed people, as long as some of them are willing to do sales and the others are willing to produce products. With such a small group, the people would have to be committed enough to forget about what they were trained for, or what they like to do, and rather work on what the community needs them to do.

I'd like to know what titles you'd recommend for references on Intentional Community, specifically for problem resolution, building concensus and avoiding pitfalls common to intentional communities. Is there one grand tome that you'd recommend, or is there an entire collection?

The largest IC I've lived in was 4 of us and we did an egalitarian/concensus style of group decision making. It worked quite well for us because we'd all been to many of the same places and had very similar decision making styles. I'm hoping to work within a much larger group this time, so good sources will be greatly appreciated.

Whether you just want to save money, enjoy getting your hands dirty in the earth, or perhaps understand the potential necessity for us to support ourselves through the coming financial restructuring and food shortages, this is something to consider. My landlord raised his family in this house. They had a large vegetable garden way out in the far end of the back yard, near the Maple tree where I sunbathe. He had 5 growing boys to feed -and to help in the garden! My neighbors 2 houses over recently created a large vegetable garden, I think it's a great idea. But it takes many hands to make light work! I've gotten as far as a container garden on my deck, with flowers, tomatoes and culinary herbs. I'd love to have a REAL garden with all sorts of vegetables and culinary and ~medicinal~ herbs. We do have a several fruit trees, but only the pears are fruiting this year.

It may be time for us to take a second look at intentional communities as well. I was at the grocery store today, marveling at the selections (& gasping at the prices!). We've had it so easy compared to our ancestors....and I get a feeling that is about to change, in a big way...

1. What was the most rewarding experience in starting your community? By that, I mean that one thing that you did that meant you had "crossed the threshhold" into something new and gave that feeling of satisfaction and contentment.

2. What was the most challenging aspect to starting your community?

Through much soul searching over the span of years, and studying, etc. I feel that being part of *some sort of intentional community is the way that my life would be most fulfilled. However, there are a few problems for me as far as that goes, and I was just wondering if anyone has any insight that might help guide me a little further down the path. I'm a health care worker, and feel called do be in that field, and most likely further my education somewhat-that's firstly who I am. I want and hope that there is somewhere out there that I could fit my passion for helping others into an IC, but it seems that most are seeking out artists/musician types. I consider myself to be those things secondly, and don't think that I could be content weaving baskets, or planting orchards, as my sole contribution to a community. I am working now on learning holistic methods to healthcare, but again, do eco villages really need medicine women? If there's anyone out there with more experience in this way of living I would greatly appreciate a nod in the right direction.

Hey everyone,
I just moved into a farmhouse here with a group of people who are creating an ecovillage. The landlord lives out of state, and rent is high considering the condition of the place, so he gives us free reign to do what we will with the place. Which is pretty cool.
Here's where it gets tricky. The landlord's daughter lives there, but is travelling this summer so shes not there and wont be until sept. The people currently there now havent met her or know what its like to live with her. Past roomates have said that she is tyrranical and really impairs any community process- she is, after all, the landlord's daughter. And yet, wishes to create an ecovillage. But ultimately, legally, what she says goes.
So I'm feeling a little wierd about this whole thing because I know this girl--we were in a sustainable community development class for a year. So Ive seen how this could potentially work--when people are willing and open to resolve conflicts, s'cool. But I can also really see how her poor communication skills and power-tripping could making signing a lease there a terrible idea.
And it's got me thinking about the power dynamics in ICs. I mean, is it really consensus-decision making if 2 people have the ultimate say, and excercise taht? Is that really equality?
Can it work to have an ecovillage with a landlord and his daughter living there?

Any advice is appreciated. I just moved in here, and the layers of conflict are becoming apparent to me. Urgh.

These people don't all agree on the exact form of society we need, the design of the society, so to solve that problem we can have several different communities on one piece of land.

Having several communities together on one piece of land has several advantages. It allows us to share resources and reduce costs. It allows us to share income sources, jointly operate businesses. It allows us to collaborate in many ways. It allows people more choices in work. It also allows us to learn from the other communities, to see first hand what other community systems work like, and if you like ideas incorporated into another community, you can incorporate them into your own community.

If saving the world is what is most important to you, you will be settle for any location. If saving the world is most important to you, you will not place any other restrictions on this. Either saving the world is MOST important to you, or it is not. Now, can I get some people to agree to collaborate with me on this?

Our first meeting on July 4th weekend was a great success. We made many new friends and learned how others are creating a sustainable homestead in the sometimes hostile environment of the Four Corners region.

For those of you not familiar with the Organic Freedom Farm, we are in the proccess of building a small intentional community in the awesome AZ Painted Desert. Our ultimate goal is to create an "Eden in the Desert" while building a network of communities so that we can learn from each other as we trade goods, services, and ideas.

We ask that you please provide your own provisions for a camping trip to a remote primitive area, (food, water, etc...) Please no chemical based products on the property. Also be advised, the farm is located on high desert grassland with minimul shade.

Construction of an outdoor bread oven is the scheduled project for the weekend, however if there is a good turn-out we may be able to do additional cob projects.

In the spirit of community we ask that all attendees remember that although we all have our own individual goals, the purpose of our group gatherings is to share rather than "promote personal agenda" Please we ask, no politics and no religion.

You should be thinking about creating a business together first, and then buying land afterwards. Land is not necessary to have a community, land is a luxury.

So to me it seems like most of you people seriously lack the interest in collaboration. That'd be ok if you were willing to relinquish control to those who have strong interest in collaboration, and let them design a system which will get you to collaborate, but you are not willing. You want to be lazy about thinking, and then make the decisions like a know-it-all. That is what we call arrogance, people who know nothing but thinks they know it all.

If you don't want to think about something, you should make a conscious decision to let someone else do the thinking for you in that area. If you want to specialize your expertise in one area, and let someone else do the thinking in another area, that is ok, as long as you let the other person do the thinking in the other area.

What you people want is control, as in consensus decision making. You don't bother to think about it, but you want to have a say in it. You are unwilling to trust someone to make the right decision on their own, without you having a veto power over that person. You don't trust them.

Collaboration requires trust. If you can't trust people, you can't collaborate. If you require veto power over people, you don't trust, and so you can't collaborate.

One place I worked at a while back, a few days after I started working there one of the workers told me the key to getting work done there. He said to wait till the boss is not looking, then do the work that needs to be done. I thought he was joking, but he was serious, and he was right. I don't work that way, so I'm no longer working there.

Why did he say that? Because no matter what you did, the boss would tell you to change it. The boss was controlling. He had to make every decision. We call that micro managing.

Imagine an engineer in such an environment, someone who takes pride in ability to make really good decisions. Someone who's very job is making decisions. That is what engineers do. We do nothing but make decisions. An good engineer is good at making decisions, and making the right decisions makes him feel important. So what happens when the boss doesn't allow an engineer to make decisions, but rather changes every decision he makes? How does that make the engineer feel? That is how consensus decision making makes decision makers feel. Good engineers do not exist in consensus environments.

If you have trust, you allow a person to make a decision. Trust me to design the system of society. Trust Chris to design the greenhouse. Trust Jim to setup the solar collectors properly. Trust Sue to decorate the main hall beautifully. Trust Jenny to design the architecture, and lay out the buildings. We don't need consensus to make such decisions. We need trust. Trust people to talk to us about the stuff that concerns us, and get our opinions. If things don't turn out exactly as you want them, you need to learn to accept that and let it be. If you are not willing to accept that, you'll never make it in a community.

For those willing to have trust and acceptance, I'm creating communities.
http://conceivia.com

People say only good people go to heaven. That includes creating heaven on Earth. The good people, people who have trust and acceptance, are the ones that'll like the idea and go there.

The not so good people, people who are greedy (can only believe in Capitalism), or controlling or untrusting (concensus), won't go there. People think others act the same as they do, so lazy people will think no one will work in such an environment, so they won't go either. Lazy and greedy people are unwilling to help others, and my system involves helping others, so such people won't be interested. So they will keep themselves out of our heaven on Earth. Bad people keep themselves in the hell they create for themselves.

Talking with people on forums, I notice a tendency for all talk an no action. I believe there is a simple reason for that. The talk is all text based, which doesn't allow people to build up the necessary trust. People need to have a sort of trusting friendship like relationship to communicate effectively. Without that, people will shoot down any ideas that come up, which could make the group move forward.

Let me give you an example. Suppose you think someone is an ax murderer. Any thing that person says or does will provide further evidence indicating that the person is in fact an ax murderer. You are looking for proof, and you will find it. You see this shown in movies a lot, 'cause it is funny how far people will go to seeing everything the person does is proof of them being an ax murderer or whatever. In fact, I think that is what "So I Married an Axe Murderer" is about.

I was watching a video recently that was a criminal law professor telling people to not talk to police. He said ANYTHING you say can be used against you, and NOTHING you say will be used to support your innocents. He gave some interesting examples. For example, he told a story about three people who were killed in a gang style execution at a certain place and said remember that and I'll quiz you on it later. Later he quizzed people, and most of the people who answered it would have been incriminating themselves if they were taking to police.

Police tend to form a opinion of who is guilty before they even talk to people. If you are black, they think you are guilty. Just like anyone else, people tend to think black people are criminals, even without any evidence. A person's appearance can let an innocent person be found guilty, and a guilty person can be found innocent. If you go to a prison, you'll find that most prisoners look guilty. They look the way they do, mostly from being born with those genes, and it may be that they go to prison mostly because of their looks.

After talking for a long time, to give people a chance to forget about it, he asked the quiz questions. He said, how many people were shot at that place? 1, 2, or 3? Of course some people raised their hands and said one, others raised their hands for 2 and others raised their hands for 3. Then he said, anyone who raised their hand for 3 should not ever talk to police. The reason is because I did not tell you those people where shot. Your indication that you know that they were shot, is like proof that you know more than you should know. The police and prosecuting attorneys will use that stuff as it it proves guilt, when in reality they only want to believe the person is guilty.

I've noticed that when we talk on forums, people jump to conclusions without any supporting evidence. They read text wrong, almost all the time. They very often assume the worst in people. What people perceive is mostly determined by what they believe, and not so much determined by the text itself. Sure better writing skills help, but when people don't trust you, there is little you can say to make them trust.

This is only about criminals. It is also about little stuff as well. If I have a PhD, you are more likely to trust the intelligence of what I say, even if you don't understand it. If you don't understand it, you tend to think more that you are stupid. Without a PhD, you don't trust the intelligence of what I say. If you don't understand it, you think I'm stupid. If I am your friend, you are more likely to listen to what I say, than if I am a stranger. When we talk only in text, you always think of me as a stranger.

We see lots of people pretending to have some magical aura or to be Jesus or whatever, in an attempt to get people to trust them more. People want to believe in super natural stuff, so they tend to fall for that stuff. If successful, the people will trust what the person says and even if the person says stupid stuff it doesn't matter.

When a person doesn't do that, if the person makes no attempt to appear as anything more than a regular person, the people will not trust that person, and will cut apart anything the person says. So if a person has a special title, the person gets more trust.

In summer 1999, at the European Rainbow Gathering in Hungary, our dream of a holy Permacultur Dragonplace started,
that became what we now call „Nature Island Dragonmill" . We were searching whole Europe ...
even to Sri Lanka ... Schweden ... searched for 3 years until finaly the dream became truth.
At October the 30th 2003 a handshake made the deal perfekt ! lol !
... to buy thy old Mill of Schweta, in todays called Saxony.

The Dragonmill, a place like from ancient times … as the Dragonmill-Island is surroundet by folldplains, alders, ditches,
smalls creeks …, fields and woods ...
a tumulus and just across the ditch in direct neighbourship there is a protected area for spring- blossoms- flowers.
Since 2007 the Nature Island of her Dragonmill is in the middle on " FFH " (Flora and Fauna Habitat) area of the European Union.
For the preservation and further cross-linking of passages (Wolf) and habitation areas for Flora and Fauna in whole Europe!
This is becomming a new big task, and a lot of local engagament is needed ...
A bit further in our bio region … the more than 700.000.000 years old Collm-vulcano, hill graves, stone circles,
and a „Dragon“-limetree aged more than 1200 years …
... the Mill its self, like it stands now was rebuild approx.. 1849 from boulders and slate ...
what was before it is a secret showing up slowly... the first proofs of humans here date back approx ... 150.000 to 200,000 years.
This was an stone axe, found just behind her Mill and is now in Dresden in a Museum,
besides this there were finds from the entire history of last thousands of years. Like 5000 Years !

To the property of the Monument-Protected Mill still belong
a big nice old baking house, granary, barn, vault stables, beehive and a picturesque chicken house!
All the buildings are settled around a paved and from herbs covered court !
To the property belong up to now: 5 hectars divided in: Yard and buildings, grassland, fruit meadow,
forest (with a tumulus) and the system of ditches and streams for her Dragonmill.
Our 11 goats and 6 sheep help us with the extensive landscape conservation,
above all they give us fresh milk, wool, and its daily animating Meck Meck Meck, some times also meat and skins.
A smal crowd of ducks and chickens take care of the snails and process our leftovers,
on the compost pile , what brings us also fresh eggs to e.g. bake mmmmh...
Next coming 4 Waterbuffalos for thy forest work and a Milk-Cow Family !

The goal of the "Nature Island Dragonmill" and us is it, to create a durable eco place for Workshops & Seminars

In this sense we also founded the „Association to conserve independent ecological ways of live“.

The Associaion expresses, what our main focus is:

-to experiance and understand Mother Gaia (earth) as a living beeing.
-The future of our children, in conformity with their nature.
-A way back to the naturalness and to independence.
-Natural Sustainable Development (holistic).
-To reconcile culture and the wildness again.
-To develop ourselfs in and with nature.
-Discovering new (old) life possibilities from nature and converting them in everyday life.

It was one of two houses that she owned and I said that I'd post a link to photos of the second house when I had the time to get them up and posted. I'm still missing a couple of photos of the kitchen interior and front porch, but most of the photos are up and available at http://www.flickr.com/photos/radiomacguys/sets/72157604926688295/

Katie asked that we sell the house to a young person at a reasonable price and terms. We have defined "young" as being under 40.

Our community is organized as a co-op and consists of about 100 households on 319 acres of woods and swamps in North Florida near Tallahassee. We've been around since the early 1970's. It's a pretty wonderful place to life.

The first house is in the midst of closing. This one is still available. It's much smaller and consists of two buildings; a wood frame one bedroom cottage and a concrete block building that originally was built as a wheelchair factory and is now being used as a community gym.

One of the "pros" of CC&Rs is that they can help insure that standards are established for a number of things, and if they were modified to meet the interests of an ecovillage and/or intentional community then it would help to maintain the environment of an ecovillage. I'm thinking of adding into them things like: no clearcutting forests, organic gardening only, agree to have community meetings, agree to resolve conflicts through good process/mediation, etc.

On the downside I've heard that they can create more of a legal structure than some people want and the idea impresses people as restricting.

But, they're used all the time, especially in more conventional subdivisions and condominium projects (no RVs in the front yard, water your lawn, etc.)

What are the methods which have been incorporated to discuss procedures and what has been the success and failures of those methods? In a utopian society, everyone would be evolved enough to live together harmoniously. Realistically, I know methods must be derived to give proper voice to all and disallow the abuse of power. I got your address from the 2007 Intentional Communities Directory (which also has a website at www.ic.org) and I’m writing in hopes of being able to enlist your help with my Master’s Thesis research project.
My research consists of measuring social capital (community involvement and connectedness) in intentional communities using the Social Capital Benchmark Survey (short form) developed by the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard, which is implemented annually to thousands of people in dozens of communities across the US. This questionnaire is reputed to be the best instrument for measuring social capital available and the most widely used (which gives me a lot of comparative data). I’m also including some questions from Rosabeth Kanter’s book Commitment and Community (1971).
This 37 question survey takes less than 5 minutes to fill out (point and click) and I’d appreciate if all the members of your IC would give it a go, so please pass this email on to fellow members. There is additional information regarding consent/confidentiality at the beginning of the survey and the link is:
it to see the important aspects of IC. Suddenly another thread made it sink home. It is the missing
link between a complacent consumer and a beginning ICer. It is becoming popular in many
Simple, it's CSA!

In Community Supported Agriculture, people join a group and put up a significant sum of
currency in order to collectively grow their food locally, usually organically. Once this communal
activity is accepted and perceived to work, the person involved is ready for the next step, IC. The
ice has been broken. The number of CSA systems in the US grows by thousands more each year.
Can we harness this soaring steed and lead those people into "CSC" or, to coin a phrase,
"Community Supported Community"? Where they don't just get their food but also their housing
Apparently the fuel crisis is causing tiny towns to fold as people move closer to cities to save the cost of fuel.

So couldn't these small towns be used for intentional communities? It would be easier to retrofit a town than to build new -- smaller carbon footprint as well.
Network. Our goal is to bring together like minded Communities,
members, homesteaders, and survivalists and plan for our future
through trade of goods, services, ideas, etc...

We are in the process of building the Freedom Farm, so things are very
primitive. We would ask that you bring all accomodations required for
a camping trip, in addition to your pot-luck contribution.

We would like to do an informal pot-luck 2ish on the 4th, but if you
would like to arrive a day early and/or stay a day or two more that
would be great!

For the Pot-luck we would ask that you bring some sort of vegetarian
dish, enough to feed 10 hungry people (I will let you know if this
changes) Your own place setting, and beverage.

This project too is in its early stages, and we don't anticipate a
huge turnout, however many people have contacted us regarding the
project and we do expect the idea to grow throughout the quad state area.

The collapse of our economy as we know it is happening quite rapidly,
We faced with the usual questions: where and with who? The who question is easier to answer, since I believe that a community must be formed organically with members existing on a similar frequency and agreed set of values. The where question is more difficult since land prices are increasing and more and more hard to find non-polluted, well situated, but still affordable location.

I'm interested to explore the established rules within an IC. Every community has a set of collectively agreed and maintained rules. Some communities are striving to have the least amount of rules, while others are functioning well with more elaborated one.

Those who are living in IC's, what is your experience with this? How did you find adjusting yourselves to the collective rules? What kind of difficulties were emanating from this? What are the most important rules according to your experience, regardless of the common diet or spiritual path?

I co-own 20 acres of forest with a small re-generating clearcut, clean water, broad valley views, large organic garden, fruit trees, acres of berries. There is no electricity at this time besides very minimal solar. I've always gardened with feeding several people in mind but its still just me. I've developed an extensive trail system and a number of very private campsites.

My vision is to have maybe a couple of small families or a few individuals in a co-operative lifestyle. I like the idea of relatively autonomous units with sharing of a large garden, helping each other on projects, sharing some meals and a nature based artistic theme. At present there is a 20' camper and a small tent camper available. I've taken on interns in the past and had WWOOFer's stay and am still open to that but would love for more long-term friends to come along. Please write to my profile if you are interested and want to learn more. This is a spectacular mountain area close to Mt. Baker for summer hiking and winter snow sports.
I don't want to live in an intentional eco community.

They make dozens of rules. If you eat meat you're evil.

Everyone *has* to be equal OR ELSE!

Me:

I don't see that this has to be the case. My vision involves using sound eco practices and technology (solar ovens and the like).

If you want meat you grow it and treat it ethically.

It's your money, if you want to own something that's your business just keep it within the commitment toward a lower carbon footprint. I know some things aren't condusive to low carbon footprint but do the research and get the lowest possible for your needs.

Yes contributions for the community's welfare are important. If you form a business, it's your business and you need to follow through with any time commitments you've made to the community.

I was teaching 8 different classes consisting of cooking, chess, mask making, art, drama, rhythm and dance, likable recyclables and stitchin'. I am hoping to meet a community or individuals to share with or join. Ideally I will find a spot close to the ocean and ecologically minded, where parents and children live close together supporting each other. A community/ group of supportive people is no longer a simple desire, but a necessity as I am now pregnant and single. I could work in a garden, with an herbalist, as a teacher or in various other positions. I have never been to Costa Rica and am not sure where to begin searching for a new home beyond seeking community. Any information applicable to a potential community to join, a job to work, a place to live, etc. is greatly appreciated. Thank you and many blessings.
